How To Pick The Right Size Jewellery For Your Child
Navigating the world of children’s jewellery sizes can be a little tricky. As fingers and ears develop at different rates, you cannot always determine the appropriate jewellery size based on their age. But do not fear. With a few simple tools and a couple of measurements, there’s no reason why you can’t get the perfect fit every time.
Rings
Just like adults, children’s fingers come in all shapes and sizes. Which makes it hard to estimate their ring size without getting them properly measured. When buying jewellery for your own child you should either have their fingers measured by a professional jeweller or find out their size yourself using a ring gauge.
If you’re buying a ring as a gift for someone else’s child then check their size with their parents first. If you do want to estimate, bear in mind that a UK size F would be considered very small (even for a child) whilst a UK size K would be a larger ring size. Rings are not recommended for children under the age of 3 as they're a choking hazard and can be lost easily.
Where possible, try to size up when purchasing a ring for a child. That way they can get more wear out of the ring as they grow even if they need to switch it on to a different finger.
Necklaces
Necklaces are a little easier to get right as you can better estimate the length of the chain according to the child’s age. Toddlers up to the age of four would typically wear a necklace between 10 and 14 inches. Whilst 16 inches would be the average length for a 12-year-old. Once they reach their teens, they can begin to wear adult sizes comfortably.
Again, to get a truly accurate length you will need to take a measurement. You can do this either by gently placing a tape measure around their neck or marking a piece of string at the point where you want the necklace to sit.
Make sure you also choose a pendant that will suit the build of the child. Young children are more likely to suit something dainty but teens might like something a bit bolder.
Bracelets
Like necklaces, you can more or less estimate a child’s bracelet size based of their age. A 5-inch bracelet is likely to fit a child aged between 5 and 7. Whilst 6 to 6.5 inches would fit a child up to age 12. For an accurate measurement, wrap a tape measure around their wrist just below their wrist bone. Add on an extra half inch to get the appropriate bracelet size.
Earrings
Stud earrings are one of the easiest pieces of jewellery to buy for a child as the post lengths don’t tend to vary a massive amount. But you should be aware that the shape and thickness of a child’s earlobe is not dependent on their age. A toddler might have large and thick lobes whilst someone in their early teens might have very dainty lobes. Choose the design and shape of your earring to suit the individual.
Children’s earrings under 5mm would be considered small whilst 7mm would be suitable for children who want larger earrings. Our range of little studs are ideal for children with smaller lobes. The fact they’re also hypoallergenic makes them perfect for sensitive ears too.
