Anyone with sensitive skin knows how challenging it can be to wear any kind of jewellery, especially earrings. That’s because the nickel found in a lot of metals, such as silver and gold, reacts with the skin and causes that dreaded redness, itching or swelling. Luckily though, there are hypoallergenic metals that are much less likely to cause an allergic reaction. One of the most popular hypoallergenic metals for jewellery is medical grade stainless steel. The vast majority of our customers (95%+) are able to wear our 316L stainless steel jewellery without trouble even if they’ve suffered allergic reactions to jewellery in the past.
But what do you do if you’re in the small percentage of people that can’t wear stainless steel? Titanium jewellery could well be the answer. Let us tell you more.
Are Titanium Earrings Good for Sensitive Ears?
Titanium earrings are some of the best on the market for sensitive ears. In its purest form, titanium is a completely biocompatible metal. This means that it can come into contact with your skin without causing a reaction or irritation. For further peace of mind, it’s worth noting that most medical implants are made from titanium as it can live in harmony with your body without causing any issues.
Do Titanium Earrings Contain Nickel?
The short answer is no, titanium earrings do not contain nickel. The longer answer is a little more complicated.
There is a slight catch that some jewellery manufacturers may advertise that they sell titanium earrings but in actual fact their products are made of a titanium alloy. These alloys can contain trace amounts of nickel which could cause a reaction for some people. This is why it’s important to do your research when shopping for titanium earrings.
Here at Solace, we only use unalloyed, implant grade or pure titanium to create our jewellery. Medical professionals consider both of these to be nickel free. Which means you can look glam in a pair of our gemstone titanium stud earrings even if you’ve experienced allergic reactions to other jewellery in the past.
So Can You Be Allergic to Titanium Earrings?
Although it is extremely rare, it is not completely impossible to be allergic to titanium earrings. In a tiny minority of cases, some people have experienced an allergic reaction to titanium but this is an exceptionally infrequent occurrence. So much so that titanium remains the worldwide recommended metal for medical implants even for those who have experienced reactions to other metals such as stainless steel.
Do Titanium Earrings Tarnish?
No. Titanium jewellery will not tarnish or corrode. Titanium is an incredibly strong and durable metal that will stand the test of time. In fact, titanium has the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metallic element. This means it’s tough yet exceptionally lightweight and comfortable to wear. It’s also completely waterproof so there’s no need to take out your titanium earrings when you swim or shower either.
How To Look After Titanium Earrings
If your titanium earrings do start to look a little dull from everyday dirt and grime, all you need to do is soak them in a bowl of mild soap and water then wipe clean with a soft cloth. Leave them to dry naturally and their shine will be back in an instant!
Where to Buy Titanium Earrings?
We firmly believe that skin-friendly jewellery doesn’t need to be boring, so you’ll find a gorgeous range of on-trend titanium earrings as part of our collection here at Solace.
If it’s classic studs you’re after, we have ball studs in both 5mm and 3mm sizes.
These look great together when recreating the curated ear trend in dual pierced lobes. You can also get playful with heart, stars or moon shape studs. All of which are also available in gold thanks to fact that Titanium can be anodised. Anodising creates a thin oxide layer which is just as biocompatible as polished titanium.
